- What you have experienced is not limited to the RBOCs. GTE
- has a policy of no new copper. To provide for growth the
- phone companies are running fiber to fixed locations and
- putting in digital subscriber carrier. The channel units
- used in these carriers generaly have bandpass filters that
- limit the bandwidth to between 2800 and 3000 HZ. A 24K
- connect requires a bandwidth of 3018 - 3080 HZ depending on
- the symbol rate.
- If they were using voice compression on these carriers you
- would probably be lucky to get a 14.4 connect. The problem
- could be corrected by equipping the carrier with different
- channel units that allow higher frequency pass through. (The
- maximum frequency is 4000 HZ because of the channel sample
- rate which is 8000 times per second. ) These units cost more
- and we wouldn't want them to have a reduction in their
- record profits now would we. (G)
